Ever since the creation of the first Fifty Fathoms watch, Blancpain has been identified with the sea. To share its passion for diving, exploration and preservation of the world’s oceans, Blancpain has collaborated with leading divers and underwater photographers to produce a collection of stunning books filled with breathtaking images which are now available for purchase.
Edition Fifty Fathoms has been methodically designed to pay tribute to the first modern diving watch, the iconic Fifty Fathoms. Each book consists of 50 double-page spreads, each measuring one fathom around its perimeter when open, hence a total of 50 fathoms. It comprises a selection of 50 underwater photographs. The number 12 also has its own significance in the conception of the publication. It is the magic number in watchmaking, as a watch depicts 12 hours on its dial. In addition, 12 is the number of letters in the name Fifty Fathoms. The collection of Edition Fifty Fathoms books will be complete in 2020, 12 years after its launch.
Edition Fifty Fathoms 2020
The Edition Fifty Fathoms has been the expression of our fantastic journey exploring the multifaceted beauty of the ocean through the lens of underwater photography. From macro photos revealing tiny creatures and complex textures, to big animals and underwater landscapes, from black and white poetry to fancy color palettes, the ocean offers infinite possibilities. The seed for this project was planted when we met with Editor, and today good friend, Dietmar Fuchs back in 2003, in Thailand, for the underwater launch of the 50th Anniversary Fifty Fathoms limited edition, and it came to life a few years later accompanying the launch of the new Fifty Fathoms collection. Our objective was to provide a platform for underwater photographers to present their work in the best possible way. To bring to life their photos, and show the beauty that makes us tick and want to immerse again and again into the fascinating underwater universe. This is something all fifty contributors to the project have in common. At the same time, I was already feeling the necessity and urgency to contribute to raising awareness of the state of our oceans, of their fragile beauty and of the complexity of underwater ecosystems. And Blancpain having contributed to the opening up of the underwater world in the 1950's, it had the obligation to pursue its contribution to ocean exploration and conservation in new ways. So the Edition was not only one of our very first initiatives in this direction, but also a cornerstone of what we now call the Blancpain Ocean Commitment. It was not only the series of twelve books, but also the numerous underwater photography exhibitions and dedicated events all around the world. Because we firmly believe that for people to care about the ocean, they need to know and understand what it is all about. You don't want to protect what is unknown. The unknown mostly generates fear. And we wanted to take the fear away and replace it with respect and love. Even though the series of twelve Edition Fifty Fathoms books is completed this year with the volume you hold in your hands, our journey continues. We invite you to stay tuned for our next initiatives, always with the goal of bringing our own contribution to help protect the ocean.

Edition Fifty Fathoms 2019
The ocean is fundamental to human wellbeing and an indispensable part of the Earth‘s life-support system, which sustains the species and the ecosystems upon which we depend. It regulates our climate and drives weather patterns. It reduces the impact of human-induced climate change by absorbing a significant part of the carbon dioxide released by hu-man activities, as well as most of the heat trapped by rising concentrations of atmospheric greenhouse gases. With this in mind, and in continuation of the Fifty Fathoms‘ contribution to the opening up of the underwater world in the early 1950s, Blancpain has been working for more than 15 years with individuals and major organizations in a long-term effort to act on three interwoven axes: education to raise the public‘s awareness; exploration and scientific research; policy and ocean conservation. The Edition Fifty Fathoms issue you hold in your hands focuses on the latter. Protected areas represent important baselines in the understanding of the true magnitude of human impacts on ocean life, as well as in the evaluation of the efficiency of management and conservation actions. These areas represent an important step toward improving the condition of the ocean to be inherited by future generations. Having contributed to the creation of more than four million square kilometers of marine protected areas through the support of the Pristine Seas project, we are now working to help local conservation initiatives conduct scientific research to evaluate their innovative approaches, and communicate their preservation efforts and promising results to the public. Our goal is to accelerate the transition to a sustainable use of the ocean through the exchange of best practices and the motivation of many more local communities to act. This Edition presents four such initiatives. Let‘s get inspired and act before it‘s too late.

Edition Fifty Fathoms 2018
Black & White
2018 marks a triple anniversary. It is of course the Fifty Fathoms' 65th Anniversary, but also 15 years from the launch of Blancpain's ocean exploration and conservation initiatives, which today are regrouped under the Blancpain Ocean Commitment label, and 10 years from the inaugural issue of Edition Fifty Fathoms. At Blancpain we believe knowledge of the underwater world brings with it concern for its protection and preservation. Thus, in continuation of the role played by the Fifty Fathoms as an instrument which contributed to the opening up of the underwater world, we have been supporting those who best raise awareness of ocean issues and especially those who convey a positive message insisting on the inspiring beauty of what's intact. Edition Fifty Fathoms was launched 10 years ago as a means to raise awareness and communicate our passion for the ocean. 40 photographers have already published their portfolios starting with the Patriarch of underwater photography Ernie Brooks who has been using light and shadow to display his passion and creativity, touching the very soul of those who have seen and appreciated his gift to us all. As a sign of recognition and gratitude for his friendship and participation in this project, we have decided to dedicate the Anniversary issue of Edition Fifty Fathoms to black & white photography, and offer a special hand-numbered series of the book with the newest Ocean Commitment limited edition timepiece.
