Ever since the creation of the first Fifty Fathoms watch, Blancpain has been identified with the sea. To share its passion for diving, exploration and preservation of the world’s oceans, Blancpain has collaborated with leading divers and underwater photographers to produce a collection of stunning books filled with breathtaking images which are now available for purchase.
Edition Fifty Fathoms has been methodically designed to pay tribute to the first modern diving watch, the iconic Fifty Fathoms. Each book consists of 50 double-page spreads, each measuring one fathom around its perimeter when open, hence a total of 50 fathoms. It comprises a selection of 50 underwater photographs. The number 12 also has its own significance in the conception of the publication. It is the magic number in watchmaking, as a watch depicts 12 hours on its dial. In addition, 12 is the number of letters in the name Fifty Fathoms. The collection of Edition Fifty Fathoms books will be complete in 2020, 12 years after its launch.
Edition Fifty Fathoms 2011
As the title of the 2011 suggest, the theme of the magazine is free diving, so all four portfolios, each with 12 shots plus the front and cover shot feature free divers and or pictures taken free diving – 50 all together as in all the Edition’s portfolio photography. The editorial content is thus split into the free diving history and one of isforemost record diver: Italian world champion Gianluca Genoni and the story of two extraordinary Fifty Fathoms watches.
Edition Fifty Fathoms 2010
As the first modern diving watch was baptized by two words, Fifty and Fathoms, each Edition Fifty Fathoms is also described by two words. In 2010 in the shortest way possible: “3 D”, which stands for the unique three dimensional view each of the 50 pages offers when using the enclosed 3D-glasses. But, different from all other 3D-printing processes, the Edition Fifty Fathoms features the regular two dimensional printing when not using the special glasses—making it a very high end print product as the other volumes of the Edition are, again featuring four outstanding portfolios. Editorial wise, the “3D” edition starts a series on Fifty Fathoms watch themes, combining the beauty of the first modern divers watch with the beauty of high selective underwater photo art
Edition Fifty Fathoms 2009
The second edition, named “Big Blue” only features the preselected and well thought over size of the “First Edition”: Each double page spread circumference of each magazine in the Edition measures exactly 182,9 centimeters or one fathom and each Edition features 50 pages, in total Fifty Fathoms of fine art photography. Beside the size the photographic content and ist philosophy started anew: In 2009 the feature theme was big animals and the editor was looking for the most astounding photography of whales and dolphins, large predators, rays and huge school of fish – combined as the Ocean’s “Big Blue”. The second volume features a gallery for starting a collecting of fine art prints that were and can be produced from each volume of the collection.
